Facebook now has 2 billion monthly users, the internet giant has announced.

The social network was founded in 2004 and reached the 1 billion-user milestone in October 2012, meaning it has signed up around 580,000 new users a day since then.

Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg, who made the announcement, said: "We're making progress connecting the world, and now let's bring the world closer together."
